Why won't the library obtain print books anymore?
Answer
To serve a university that is focused on quickly changing fields such as technology and healthcare, the library must ensure that available research materials provide the most up-to date information. One way to do this is to purchase packages of eBooks that address current curricular offerings and trends in the industries.
Other reasons that we do not collect print books include:
- Space: The library does not have the space to accommodate a large print collection and the space taken up by shelving can be put to more innovative use.
- Cost: It is time consuming and expensive to add and remove print books from our catalog, whereas eBooks are added automatically upon purchase.
- Convenience: eBooks can be used by multiple people at once.
- Equity: Collecting only eBooks ensures that remote students have the same access to library resources as those who attend in person.
The Library will continue to retain a small core print collection (items such as the APA Style manual) and a physical gaming collection. In addition, we will periodically have print book giveaways!
